Prelude[]
Akemi Kurenai waits alone in her apartment as the debt collectors bust down the door. When they find her alone, they ask her where her parents are, and she explains that she refused to run away with them, having become tired of a life on the run. One of the debtors attempt to kidnap her, but then she uses her ability on him to lock his momentary emotion of being unsettled, explaining that unless she unlocks it for him, he will remain in that state forever. The debtors, all having changed their attitudes, call someone on the phone to report her. A few minutes later, a woman who names herself Mrs. Robinson arrives and explains to Akemi that she is a part of a huge system known as the Towa Organization, and that her two choices are either to be adopted by Mrs. Robinson, or to be killed. Akemi accepts to being taken in, though in her mind she knows that, if she reveals the truth, she will no doubt be killed on the spot: she does not actually have an ability, the men's reactions merely the result of suggestion, a skill she had mastered over the years. The narration teases the day that Akemi and Nagi Kirima will meet[2].
Chapter One: Vermillion Hurt[]
1
As the middle school classroom is buzzing with rumors about Nagi Kirima, newly released from the hospital, Akemi Kurenai walks in and inquires about her, mentally noting a hint of frustration at having failed to look into her. Then, she secretly receives a note from someone behind her, on which is written a plea for help from "Vermillion Hurt".
After finishing up her business at school, Akemi visits the hospital, and has a conversation with a doctor and secret terminal for the Towa Organization, about the strange cases of patients with their bodily functions completely frozen, theorizing about what could be the source of the phenomenon. The doctor informs Akemi that, while he was occupied, a woman came and briefly took a look one of the patients, leaving Akemi to wonder who it could be. Afterwords, she visits the hospital room of an afflicted patient, looking over it and thinking about the mysterious phenomenon, when she briefly looks out the window and sees a woman looking at her, their eyes meeting. Akemi thinks to herself that the woman is "not just small fry", having an inkling that she was the one to have visited the patient. At the same time, the woman from below, Nagi Kirima, mutters aloud the exact same impression as Akemi had about her.
